Mill Valley -- Students at two Mill Valley elementary schools will lend their ideas and imagination in transforming the tired playground at nearby Sycamore Park into a place for fun, games and family activities.

John Dean of nationally recognized playground design firm Leathers & Associates will spend the day with students at Park and Edna Maguire schools listening to their ideas for rebuilding the park.

Leathers & Associates is a nationally recognized playground design group whose playground design and community playground concepts have been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, Readers Digest, and on Sesame Street.

Dean and organizers of the Sycamore Park neighborhood committee that is leading the redesign effort will unveil preliminary design plans later that evening at the Mill Valley Parks and Recreation Department offices.

The meeting also serves as the formal kick off for the group's campaign to rebuild the park, which suffers from outdated and severely worn equipment, poor playing surfaces and inadequate facilities to support park visitors, children and families.

Children, parents and business members are encouraged and welcomed to come and view the plans, see how the process works and find out how they can get involved. The Sycamore Park Project is currently looking for Committee Members, Sponsors and Volunteers to join its effort.

Leathers has designed and orchestrated the construction of over 1,700 playgrounds worldwide, including Millennium Park in San Anselmo that was completed in 2000. The community of San Anselmo successfully worked together with Leathers and Associates to create and build this wonderful park. The park was completed in 2000.
